Brief history of Baccarat
There’re many beliefs about the origin of Baccarat. Literally, Baccarat means ZERO in English, Italian, and French, and hence it’s not clear when and who invented this game. According to some historian, an Italian gambler: Felix Falguierein was the first player to play Baccarat with his deck of Tarot cards, and later Baccarat marked it journey to many countries and continents to finally reach the place where it is at now. Over the years of its journey, it acquires many regional rules to form many global variants extensively played today. Out of many global Baccarat variants, three are extremely popular: baccarat chemin de fer, punto banco, and baccarat banque. Punto Banco is highly popular in North American continents; yet other variants also have their effective global presence amongst various classic card games.
How to Play Baccarat
Playing Baccarat is actually a straightforward process where not many steps are required to proceed with the game. There are two playing hands in each Baccarat session; one is Banker and other is a player. However, be noted that Banker has no association with the casino, and similarly player has no relationship with participating player or anybody else. They just are the naming conventions; you can virtually call them Dealer1 and Dealer2. Every participating player needs to decide where he wants to put his betting amount, i.e., on players win, on bankers win, or on a tie. Once he placed his bet, two cards are dealt to both, i.e., player aka dealer1 and banker aka dealer2. Third card is optional and is only dealt to banker or dealer if their first two cards qualify certain conditions. This process is inevitably done by the dealer/software, so you don’t need to think about it.
Winner is decided based on final hand rankings. However, there’re certain rules to calculate the worth of each dealt card, like Ace is counted as one while all face cards alongwith ‘10’ are considered as zero, and rest cards are taken at their face value. Furthermore, only the unit’s digit of card’s total is taken into account wiping off the tens digit altogether, e.g., hand ranking of ‘7’ and ‘6’ is counted as ‘3’ not ‘13’.
Finally, taking all the counting rules into account only one hand ranking, which holds the highest total closest to ‘9’ is declared the winner. However, in rare circumstances, game ends with a tie where participating player gets even higher prizes if he placed his bets on a tie.
So, Baccarat is an easy but effective card game played by numerous casino goers at least once in their lifetime. Be sure to play by yourself to feel the exaggeration it creates!
